Munya Avigail Upin

Munya is an educator, designer and metalsmith. She is an accomplished and widely recognized metalsmith who makes jewelry and contemporary Jewish ritual items including mezuzah cases. Her designs are unique and are often described by people as exquisite.  She works extensively in woven silver to create intricate works of art.

Artist Statement on Jewish Ritual Objects: “the Jewish ceremonial objects evolved out of a desire to create beautiful objects for weekly and yearly ritual celebrations. I am intrigued by the history of these objects as well as the challenge to design pieces for use in a contemporary setting. Most of the Judaica contains woven elements which create a uniquely rich, textural surface. These surfaces, combined with clean and simple forms, express m design sensibilities and my attempt to make ritual objects that elevate the ceremony with which they are associated”.

Munya was born and raised in a small town in Minnesota that only had three Jewish families. She holds a BFA from Drake University and an MFA from Cal State. She has taught metalworking for many years at a number of institutions including the Penland School of Crafts and at the University of Wisconsin.

Munya’s works are included in the collection of the Jewish Museum of New York. Belle Rosenbaum also collected Munya’s mezuzahs and included her work in “Upon Thy Doorposts”.

If you collect modern mezuzah cases, you must own one of Munya’s works in your collection.
